Picturesque fishing villages Lygia and Nikiana
If you are staying on the east side of the island you should know its advantages. Eastern part of the island has calm waters, island hopping advantage, the main tourist resort in Nidri and many more. Here you can discover small fishing settlements on the east side, like Lygia and Nikiana, that are interesting for any foreign tourist.
Between Lefkada town and Nidri are situated two coastal villages, Lygia and Nikiana. Both places have a good connection with the rest of the island. Many families find the accommodation it this area and spend their holiday here.
Charming Village Lygia
Lygia is very close to capital of Lefkada, it is only 5-6km away. Follow the main road that leads to Nidri, and after passing Kariotes you will reach the small fishing port of Lygia. Besides the great location, it has crystal clear waters, and it is well liked by families and fishermen. The seaside village is ideal for relaxing and restful vacation.
The village is home for 750 inhabitants. On the main street in Lygia you can find shops and restaurants. There is also a small marina, next to which is a promenade with seaside coffeshops and fish tavernas. If you like seafood, don’t miss to visit tavernas in Lygia.
The beach of Lygia is still and shallow and suitable for families with children. It lies next to the main road, so you can walk or come by car. The beach consists of pebble and gravel. It offers sunbeds and parasols, but for the drink or food you will have to go to the town.
If you want to make a short break and relax, Lygia is perfect for you. Before you visit bustling Nidri, vibrant capital town Lefkas or some of the popular beaches on the west side, pass to the small charming port and slow down.
Scenic Nikiana village
A little further from Lygia, is a scenic Nikiana village and a small harbour. The port with boats and yachts is situated in a beautiful natural landscape with a lush vegetation. Nikiana is between Lygia and Perigiali, and 9 km from Lefkas town.
Village spreads around the coast and lies below the mountain Skaros. If you like walking in the nature, the mountain will surely surprise you with unique flora. Here grows the unique oak wood that is rare on Ionian islands. Besides nature, you can visit important island churches, such as the historic Monastery of the Red Church. On your way uphill to the mountain, you will enjoy in an amazing panoramic view that will astonish you.
The beach in Nikiana is narow, consisting of sand and pebbles. The beach is not organized but, some of the bars that are on the beach offer sun beds and umbrellas. Also, you can easily find natural shade, because the beach is surrounded by the vegetation. From activities here you can find diving center, or try wind surfing or water skiing.
If bustiling and crowded tourist places are not your main goal, the coastal villages on the east side might be the right choice for you. Many families are happy to find accommodation here and spend a relaxing summer holiday. The good connection with the rest of the island, especially with Nidri and Lefkas are one the biggest advantages of these places.
