Lefkada Town or Lefkas is undoubtedly the place you do not want to miss when visiting Lefkada island. You will be surprised by the bright coloured houses and small intertwined alleys in the old town. The historic Old Town
The town is characteristic for its wooden bridge that is surely the spot where you will take a photo. The bridge is especially attractive during sunset. Next to the bridge starts the main pedestrian area, with the central road of Lefkada Town surrounded by picturesque small narrow alleys. The heart of the town is its main square, where the church of Aghios Spyridon dominates. Architecture of Lefkada Town
Lefkadian architecture is very peculiar. It is unique in Greece. The traditional Lefkadian house has light materials, such as woods and metal sheets. This way the houses endured many centuries with earthquakes and stayed well preserved. Usually the ground floor is made from stone and the upper floor from wood. Under Venice rule, 17th century, the capital was transferred from the Santa Maura Castle to today’s location. This is the reason why the urban planning of modern Lefkas Town, designed by the Venetians, resembles a medieval town. The main commercial street cuts in two the centre of the old town. Side streets and main street are creating the shape of a fishbone. Also in the churches of Lefkada Town we can see the legacy of Venetians architectural style. The most significant findings are those from the german archaeologist Dorpfeld, who believed that Lefkada was the Homeric Ithaka. The churches of Lefkada Town are of great historical and architectural value. In the old town, in the squares and in the main street there are the churches of Aghios Minas, of Pantokratoras, and the one of Agios Spiridonas. City churches were built between the 17th and 18th century. Therefore they show the architectural influence of Venetian style. On the outside many churches are accompanied with bell towers. The medieval Venetian Castle of Santa Maura is only one kilometre away from Lefkas. Step into Lefkadian history and find out more about the previous medieval capital Santa Maura. To the left and right of the castle there are beaches stretching around the town and the laguna. Ammoglossa, Castro, Gira, Agios Ioannis, allideal for swimming. Agios Ioannis also for kitesurfing.
