Lefkada town or Lefkas is undoubtedly the place you do not want to miss when visiting Lefkada island. You will be surprised by the bright coloured houses and small intertwined alleys in the old town. Lefkas is ideally located on the northeast of the island and at the entrance of the island. It is very easy to move with a car from the mainland to the island. When you enter the island, after passing the floating bridge you will reach the town.The capital is only 20km away from the Preveza airport (PVK). Lefkas is also a harbour with a modern marina, with many luxurious yachts docked.

The historic old town 

The town is characteristic for its wooden bridge that is surely the spot where you will take a photo. The bridge is especially attractive during the sunset. Next to the bridge starts the main pedestrian street, with small narrow alleys. In the old town of Lefkas you will find everything you need for your holiday vacation. Walk to the nearest coffee shops or taste local specialties in tavernas. The heart of the town is the main square, where dominates the church of Aghios Spyridon. Architecture of Lefkada town

Lefkadian architecture is very peculiar in Greece. Lefkadian house has light materials, such as woods and metal sheets. This way houses endured many centuries with earthquakes and stayed conserved. Usually the ground floor is made from stone and the upper floor from wood. Under the rule of Venice in the 17th century, the capital is transferred from the Santa Maura castle to today’s location. Urban planning of Lefkas comes from Venetians, that resembles medieval town. Main commercial street passes throughout the centre of old town. Side streets and main street are creating the shape of a fishbone. We can also see the legacy of Venetians on the churches in the old town. In Lefkada town, you can start your cultural journey in the Cultural Center of Lefkada. The building houses several museums, for instance the Archaeological Museum, the Lefkadio Hern Foundation, the International Folklore exhibition, etc. The most important exhibition is certainly the Archaeological museum. The museum covers the historical period from the Paleolith till the Romans. The most significant are the findings from the german archaeologist Dorpfeld, believing that Lefkada was a Homeric Ithaka. The museum of Angelos Sikelianos, the newest museum in town, exhibits the poet’s life and work. If you are looking for something different you can visit the Phonograph museum. Venetian architecture and churches

The churches are of great historical and architectural value. In the old town of Lefkas, in the squares and main street there are the churches of Aghios Minas, of Pantokratoras, and the one of Agios Spiridonas. City churches were built between the 17th and 18th century. They are under the influence of Venetian architecture. On the outside many churches are accompanied with bell towers. Interior is often adorn with the baroque iconostasis and post byzantine icons. Especially appealing are the renaissance paintings not so usual in the greek churches.

Surrounding area with beaches

The medieval Venetian Castle of Santa Maura is only one kilometre away from Lefkas. Step into Lefkadian history and find out more about the previous medieval capital Santa Maura. To the left of the castle there are beaches stretching around the town. Ammoglossa, Castro, Gira, Agios Ioannis, these beaches are ideal for swimming. Agios Ioannis also for kitesurfing. Walk around the lagoon or go cycling. Enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the windmills and romantic sunsets.

Little further, 2km away from the town you can visit the most remarkable religious monument of the island. The monastery of Faneromeni is on the hill overlooking the beautiful beaches of Lefkas. The panoramic view will astonish you and it will surely stay in your memory.
