Lefkada town or Lefkas is undoubtedly the place you do not want to miss when visiting Lefkada island. You will be surprised by the bright coloured houses and small intertwined alleys in the old town. Lefkadian architecture is very peculiar in Greece. Lefkadian house has light materials, such as woods and metal sheets. This way houses endured many centuries with earthquakes and stayed conserved. Usually the ground floor is made from stone and the upper floor from wood. Under the rule of Venice in the 17th century, the capital is transferred from the Santa Maura castle to today’s location. Venetian architecture and churches
The churches are of great historical and architectural value. In the old town of Lefkas, in the squares and main street there are the churches of Aghios Minas, of Pantokratoras, and the one of Agios Spiridonas. City churches were built between the 17th and 18th century. They are under the influence of Venetian architecture. On the outside many churches are accompanied with bell towers. Interior is often adorn with the baroque iconostasis and post byzantine icons. Especially appealing are the renaissance paintings not so usual in the greek churches.

The medieval Venetian Castle of Santa Maura is only one kilometre away from Lefkas. Step into Lefkadian history and find out more about the previous medieval capital Santa Maura. To the left of the castle there are beaches stretching around the town. Ammoglossa, Castro, Gira, Agios Ioannis, these beaches are ideal for swimming. Agios Ioannis also for kitesurfing.
