In the central part of the island, at an altitude of 500 meters, you will find the charming village Karya. Karya is 20 minutes drive from Lefkada Town and Nidri. A lush vegetation surrounds this picturesque village.
Traditional architecture in Karya
Even though Karya is far from beaches, the village is captivating by its own authentic features. Everything here reminds of tradition and past times. In the small village you can enjoy walking in the cobbled streets and observe stone built houses. This picturesque settlement is characteristic for his well maintained houses in a traditional architectural style. Here you will be welcomed by locals, and you might encounter some villagers wearing traditional clothing.

The Monastery of Agios Ioannis Prodroms is a monument of historic importance. You can visit the monastery in the meadow below the village. The religious monument dates back to the 1605 a.d. This place was for many years the religious center of the island.
Meet locals and their customs
Villagers preserved old customs, such as the traditional wedding. Infact, in august, here takes place the event that is reconstructing the old Lefkadian wedding. The event is very attractive and well visited by tourists.
Besides the traditional wedding event, in the summer you can attend various different events in Karya. Events like the Feast of John the Baptist, the Festival of Traditional dance, the Feast of Oregano, the Wine Festival, are taking place during summer months.

The village is also well know for its traditional embroidery. In the Folklore Museum in the town you can familiarize with the work of Maria Koutsochero and her technique. She created the Karsaniko embroidery style that is unique in Greece. This tehnique is called Karsaniko stitch and here you can see the original work of Maria Koutsochero. In the museum a visitor can also see household items, like a furniture and Lefkadian house layout.
In Karya,there is a unique Phonograph, Gramophone and Radio museum. Opened for the public in 2015, the museum is founded by a private collector. The museum exibits the collection of old gramophones, phonographs, radios and various discs.
For wine lovers, there is a traditional winery: the Lambikos winery. Here they make tsipouro, the famous greek alchoholic beverage from grapes. In the meadow below Karya various varieties of grapes grow. So this is the right place where you can taste and buy local wines.
