Kokkini Ekklisia Monastery, Nydri
The first temple was founded by monks in 1478, standing as a timeless symbol of faith and heritage. Known as the “Red Church” (Kokkini Ekklisia), it owes its name to the warm hues of the local stones and red clay used in its construction. The church blends harmoniously with the surrounding landscape of Lefkada.
During the 16th century it flourished into a monastery, serving as a refuge and base for local fighters during the Greek Revolution. Today, the temple is dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary. Every year Cultural Clubs organise grand festival filled with traditional music, local dances and authentic Greek hospitality.
Church of Agia Kyriaki, Geni
Nestled on the peaceful Geni peninsula, overlooking the stunning bay of Vlychos lies the charming Chapel of Agia Kyriaki. It is also known as the Chapel of the Rock. Visitors can reach this picturesque spot either by boat or on foot. So in this way they can the crystal-clear waters or the beautiful nature path at the end of the road to Geni.
Just beside the chapel rests the tomb of the archaeologist Wilhelm Dörpfeld. He passionately believed that Lefkada was the true Ithaca of Homer. Every year the chapel comes alive with local celebrations in honor of Agia Kyriaki. This offers to visitors a glimpse of authentic religious island life.
