Picturesque fishing villages Ligia and Nikiana

The Eastern part of Lefkada Island has calm waters and it is the starting point for island hopping  among Ionian Islands. The main tourist cosmopolitan resort of Nidri is here. Thus, this part of the island offers many advantages. Here you can also discover small fishing settlements such as Ligia and Nikiana, that are interesting for many foreign tourists especially those travelling with small kids.

The two coastal villages of Ligia and Nikiana are situated between Lefkada Town and Nidri. Both places have a good connection with the rest of the island. Many families find accommodation in this area and spend their holiday here.

Charming Village Ligia

Ligia is approx. 6km away from the capital of the island Lefkada Town. Follow the main road that leads to Nidri, and after passing Kariotes you will reach the small fishing port of Ligia. Besides the great location, it has crystal clear waters, and it is well liked by families and fishermen. The seaside village is ideal for a restful vacation.

The village is home for 750 local inhabitants. On the main street of Ligia you can find a few shops and restaurants. There is also a small marina, next to which there is a picturesque promenade with a couple of seaside coffeshops and fish tavernas. If you like seafood, don’t miss to pay a visit to the tavernas in Ligia.

The little beach of Ligia is mainly pebbly. It faces still and shallow waters suitable for families with children. It lies next to the main road, so you can walk or or go there by car. The beach offers sunbeds and parasols. During the summer a couple of bars behind the beach serve drinks and light food.

If you want to make a short break and relax, Ligia is perfect for you. Before you visit bustling Nidri, the vibrant capital Lefkas Town or some of the most popular beaches on the west side of the island, pass from this small charming port and slow down.

Scenic Nikiana village

A little further from Ligia, there is the lovely village of Nikiana with its picturesque harbour. The port with boats and yachts is situated in a beautiful natural landscape. Nikiana is between Ligia and Perigiali, about 9km from Lefkas Town.

The village spreads around the coast and lies below the mountain Skaros. If you like walking in the nature, the mountain will surely surprise you with its unique flora. Infact here grows a rare variety of oak, which you can find only in Lefkada and in a handful of other forests in Europe. Besides nature, you can visit important churches, such as the historic Monastery of the Red Church. On your way uphill to the mountain, you will enjoy an amazing panoramic view that will astonish you.

The beach in Nikiana is narrow, consisting of sand and pebbles. The beach is not organized but, some of the bars that are on the beach offer sun beds and umbrellas. Also, you can easily find natural shade, because the beach is surrounded by green vegetation. In Nikiana there is also a very well organised diving center, and facilities to do sailing, kayak and  water skiing.

If bustiling and crowded tourist places are not what you are looking for, the coastal villages on the east side might be the right choice for you. Many families are happy to find accommodation in Ligia and Nikiana and spend a relaxing summer holiday here. The good connection with the rest of the island, especially with Nidri and Lefkas Town are one of tthe biggest advantages of these places.
