Surrounded with more than 20 small islands and islets, Lefkada is the ultimate island hopping destination. One of the biggest attractions of Lefkada island are the nearby paradise islands called Princes’ islands. This group of small islands are located right across the main resort of the island Nidri, and the islands that belong to this group are Meganisi, Skorpio, Scorpidi, Sparti, Madouri, Cheloni and Tsokari. Calm waters of this part of Ionian sea makes Princess islands ideal for cruises, boat excursions, kayaking, paddle boarding.
Called Pringiponisia, the group of island situated between Lefkada and Etoloakarnania ,are perfect for exploration of stunning Ionian sea.
The largest and most touristic of all Princes’ islands, Meganisi island, is the only island from this group that is accessible with a ferry. Beautiful sheltered bays, traditional villages, famous sea cave Papanikolis, turquoise waters are one of the reasons why you visit this beautiful island. Charming hilltop village like Sparthori with exceptional views, or Vathi traditional fishing village are ideally places for a stroll or a sea food dining.
The lovely small islet Madouri belongs to family Valaoritsi. On this beautiful island the famous greek poet Aristotelos Valaoritsi was living with his family. Today, the island is still private, and the neoclassical yellow mansion dominates the island. Madouri island and house was used as a location for a Wilder’s movie Fedora.
The closest island to the shores of Lefkada, right across the village of Perigiali, is Heloni island. This small island without inhabitants is located between Madouri and Sparti islands. The name of the island means turtle in greek, alluding at the shape of the island. Tiny,green island is densely covered with olive trees.
Scorpios, Aristotle Onassis’ private island, is certainly the most famous islands amongst Ionian archipelago. Widely known, this paradise island was a very popular jetset destination of the 60’s and early 70’s. Bringing fame to Scorpios island, Aristotle Onassis was the one to put Lefkada island in the tourist maps. The main tourist resort Nidri today, is the place where you will find the statue dedicated to Greek businessman. Nowadays, the island is still private and belongs to Russian magnate Dmitry Rybolovlev. On the island, only the access to Maria Kalas beach is allowed, and many boat excursions include this beach in their itinerary.
Besides legendary Scorpios island, island Sparti was bought also by Aristotle Onassis.
Motor boat rental
Rent a small boat without licence, or hire a rib (for boat licence holders) and enjoy island hopping between Lefkada island and Etoloakarnania. On the eastern part of the island you can rent small motor boats without licence, usually 4.5m-5m boats of 30HP/40HP. Near eastern part of Lefkada, the sea is calm and the power engine (30HP) of a small boat will allow you to go to nearby island (including Princess’ islands) without possesing a boat licence. For faster and further trips you will need a licence, and you will be able to visit captivating Kastos, Kalamos, Ithaki, Kefalonia, Paxos etc.
