When we speak about Lefkada everybody thinks about the sea, summer, beautiful beaches and so on. However not many people have an idea about how the island was in the past. If we start talking about the habits, lifestyle and the difficulties of the Lefkadian society at the beginning of the 20th century we would need thousands of pages. And it would be very difficult. To write clearly and accurately. And at the same time give you a clear picture of how the island was in the past.

That is why we decided to show you the history of Lefkada in a different way. To give you the chance to see the island through the eyes of ordinary people!

Indeed everything becomes easier with these old photos of Lefkada island which reveal to us Lefkadins’ life in that distant era!!

Lefkadian People at work

We can understand many things about the old Lefkadian way of life by observing facial expressions and their dresses. Even by watching people at  work, we discover that the Lefkadian world was very different from nowdays.

Οrdinary people tried to survive in a difficult environment. The work was hard and lasted almost all day. Material possessions were very limited and only a narrow circle of wealthy people could enjoy them.

Their faces show innocence if we compare them with modern people, lacking greed and consumerism, mostly poor but happier; it seems looking at the prematurely aged but cheerful faces, than their wealthier descendants.

Womens life was also hard,they worked hard and were socially oppressed both ; by the social environment but mainly from their family.To such an extent that makes us wonder how they managed to live ; something that today’s could not put up with.

Fortunately the world is changing, and development solves many of the problems of the past but it also creates new issues and divisions.
